Plane

Although Dornoch doesn’t have its own airport, you can fly to Inverness then hire a car or book a taxi at the airport for the 45-minute drive north to Dornoch. Inverness Airport has regular flights with British Airways and EasyJet departing from across the UK. For international guests, you can choose to fly directly into Edinburgh then drive to Dornoch. The drive usually takes around 3-4 hours, but please be aware that the A9 out of Edinburgh can get heavily congested and we recommend planning accordingly.

Car

If you're up for a scenic road trip across the UK, you can choose to make the entire journey by car. We've made this drive from London several times, typically splitting it into two days: the first day, we drive about 7 hours to Edinburgh, where we stop for the night, and then continue on to Dornoch the next day. We highly recommend a stop at Tebay Services on the Scottish border—it's a much more pleasant experience than your typical service station!

Train

AccesRail is the most popular train service in the Highlands, followed by ScotRail. You can easily catch trains to Edinburgh from all major UK cities, and there are frequent services from Edinburgh to Inverness. Unfortunately, trains beyond Inverness are less frequent and often not direct. However, if you choose to travel by regional train, the closest station to Dornoch is in the nearby town of Tain, a 15-minute drive away.

Given the Highlands are more remote than the rest of the UK, we highly recommend hiring a car for part or all of your journey or arranging a taxi from Inverness Airport to Dornoch. Fortunately, Australians can use their Australian driver's license to rent a car in Scotland or England.
